Staying Sustainable During a New Season

As we step into A/W 24/25, sustainability continues to be a driving force in fashion. This season, more than ever, consumers seek clothing that aligns with their values of environmental consciousness and ethical production. The rise of circular fashion continues as brands design pieces meant to last through the years. Sustainable fabrics were the driving force for brands to start focusing on creating pieces that can be recycled, repaired, or reused, giving garments a second life. This shift toward circularity not only encourages consumers to buy less, but also empowers them to choose high-quality, durable pieces that will last beyond one season, making their fashion choices not just stylish, but also smart and empowering.

This season is all about timeless, versatile styles that can be worn year after year, especially as we see a rise in minimalism. Expect to see classic silhouettes like tailored coats, structured blazers, and cozy knitwear reimagined with sustainable materials like organic wool, recycled cashmere, and plant-based dyes. These pieces are stylish and also kinder to the planet, as they avoid harmful chemicals and excessive water usage in their production. Personally, I buy most of my knitwear second hand and have focused on choosing natural materials over synthetic to ensure the garment will stay in good condition. In addition to knitwear, I always have good luck in the jackets section at Goodwill. My favorite winter coat is from there and is still in near perfect condition. Going in person is another way to stay sustainable when shopping for a new season. As I’ve learned more about the construction of garments, I’ve gotten particular about the fit and quality of clothes. Shopping in person allows you to try everything on and truly decide if you love a piece (I also never buy something if I don’t absolutely love it, even if it’s only $5!) Online shopping always makes me spend more money than I planned, and it is a hassle to return if a piece doesn’t work out.

With minimalism returning, minimal colors in earth tones and natural hues will continue into A/W 24/25. I like to think I wear fun, bright colors, but that’s rarely true. I’m a maximalist in my heart, but in practicality, I don’t want to bother with bright colors and lots of layering. I hope to actually see interesting earth tones, maybe even jewel tones, in terracotta, deep indigo, and dusty orchid.

Regardless of the season, sustainability is a lifestyle that is all about making thoughtful, informed choices. As a student, it is difficult to invest in these timeless styles that I might mentally outgrow (I do feel my style has evened out in the past two years). That is why I highly recommend thrifting or curated vintage shops. The beauty of these places is that almost everything is one of a kind, making your fashion choices truly unique and special. It’s much cheaper, and still a quality item. You can find your whole Pinterest board second hand; it might just take a little digging!
